罢别濒别肠补谤别鈥檚 Kern Psychiatric Health Facility (PHF) team in Bakersfield recently held their first potluck event, which marked an exciting milestone as they prepare for the program鈥檚 opening.

Even though Kern PHF is not yet open, the staff gathered to celebrate and build connections in anticipation of the opening on May 15, 2024.

We are proud of our Kern PHF team鈥檚 eagerness to provide exceptional psychiatric care to the Bakersfield community.

When the TAY ROC team first connected with 鈥凄补惫颈诲,鈥� he was experiencing the 鈥渨orst time of his life.鈥� He was homeless, hopeless, and in crisis. His relationships with family and other loved ones were shattered, and he was mourning the deaths of several family members. It was 鈥渢roubled times,鈥� and he needed help. He says, 鈥淚 have never been in that kind of situation before. That kind of mental health breakdown was completely new to me. I was falling through the cracks in the system, and there is no clear path to get yourself out of complex situations like that. Now that I am doing better, I feel a lot of empathy for other people who are still going through times like those.鈥�

After a brief stay at John George Psychiatric Hospital, David was connected to TAY ROC. David credits the TAY ROC team with turning his life around. 鈥淚 was homeless, and I am autistic, and this team saved me. They got me a job, they found me housing, they provided the best therapy I鈥檝e had in years, and went over and above in every respect to ensure I was successful. They spent hours on the phone with me when I was panicking. They made sure I had food. They drove me to appointments in their own cars. They gave me expert-level job coaching. They met me wherever I needed them to be, no matter what. I have never had mental health support like that.鈥�

David says he is now on the road to recovery, thanks to TAY ROC. 鈥淚 want to express to you all what an amazing job TAY ROC is doing. I want to especially call out Shanina Hill, Brittany Flentroy, Philip Yee, Jennifer Pardo, and everyone on the team that I worked with. Shanina Hill deserves a raise and a promotion. I want to tell everyone about TAY ROC. If there were more programs like this in Alameda County, a real difference could be made in so many people鈥檚 lives. I am contacting Governor Newsom to make sure people at the highest level hear about your program.鈥�

On April 27, the BHST, TAY, and CARE programs actively participated in , a non-profit organization coordinating volunteer events to enhance the quality of life in Modesto, California. Our committed staff members participated in diverse community volunteer projects to make a positive impact:

• Cleaning up dry creek beds and walking trails

• Making flower bouquets

Our program and staff are dedicated to equity and inclusion, which our CHEI committee spearheads. Our team鈥檚 participation in LOVE Modesto strengthens our commitment to the community we serve and makes a meaningful difference beyond our organization.

On Thursday, May 2, 罢别濒别肠补谤别鈥檚 Orange County AOT FSP was honored with the Outstanding Contract Service Provider award at the Inaugural Mental Health Gala hosted by Orange County Behavioral Health. Led by administrator Jessica Dirks, LCSW, and clinical director Skylar Valles, LCSW, the OC AOT FSP team has consistently delivered exceptional services to the community.

Lei Portugal Calloway, Peer Team Lead, had the privilege of accepting the award on behalf of the program. 

The inaugural Mental Health Awareness Gala 2024, held at The Velvet Rose in Orange, California, featured a ceremony with 130 nominations across various categories, including BHS program, BHS contract provider, and Behavioral Health Community Advocate. OC AOT FSP emerged as the 1st Place winner in the BHS Contract Provider category, highlighting their dedication and remarkable achievements in enhancing behavioral health services for Orange County.

Music from the 80s to current hits further added to the lively atmosphere. A highlight of the celebration was the delicious BBQ meal served to all, which allowed staff to mingle, share stories, and make connections.

At a gathering filled with laughter, warmth, and touching speeches, the Morton Bakar Center family came together to bid farewell to beloved staff member Mary Thrower as she embarks on a well-deserved retirement. Mary鈥檚 illustrious career with 麻花色情片 spans over two decades, a journey that began at Morton Bakar Center, where she served as the administrator, later taking on roles as the Regional Director of Operations and Vice President of Operations.

The celebration was a moving testament to Mary鈥檚 profound impact on the 麻花色情片 community. Colleagues past and present, including former nursing directors, dietary managers, rehab staff, environmental service managers, social workers, and even her predecessor as administrator, united to honor Mary鈥檚 tenure at 麻花色情片. They shared speeches, expressing admiration for Mary鈥檚 empathetic listening, kind heart, and unparalleled ability to forge deep connections with others. Mary鈥檚 influence exceeded her official titles. She was a mentor and a guiding light for many, leaving an unforgettable mark on countless lives, professionally and personally.

The evening was emotional, with no dry eye in the room as the Morton Bakar family joined in showering Mary with love and well wishes.

In 2022, California established the , which helps people in California facing severe mental health challenges (schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders) receive care that they otherwise would likely not receive. 麻花色情片 is proud to be a leading partner in this new effort, having been awarded three of the CARE Act programs currently operating or in development in eight counties. The State of California intends to implement CARE Act services in every county by December 1, 2024. 麻花色情片 has CARE Act programs in San Diego and Orange Counties. 

The Orange County AOT CARE Act team (an expansion of our OC AOT program) was honored to be visited recently by the . Ms. Kaka鈥檚 role is to work with governments, community providers, and other related partners to learn about and implement best practices for addressing the homelessness crisis. She and her team share these learnings with state agencies and legislative partners to inform statewide initiatives. During the visit, Ms. Kaka asked questions about their experiences since they are among the first teams to implement the CARE Act model. The team was proud and excited to illustrate what鈥檚 working, where 麻花色情片 is excelling, and to provide ideas on overcoming some of the barriers they are experiencing.  

鈥淲e work hard to ensure that services are specifically designed for the person in front of us. Everybody is an individual and will be honored like that here at this program. That鈥檚 what it鈥檚 all about.鈥� 

Although it is early in the CARE Act model roll-out process, the OC team has identified three areas of strength at the OC site. First, the team meets people where they are, whether in the community, jails, or hospitals. They connect with them early and often, ensuring that people receive care when and where they need it. Secondly, the OC team provides valuable and insightful peer services. Our peer staff excels at creating relationships based on shared lived experiences and provides real examples and hope for recovery. Last but certainly not least, the team has developed a thorough and replicable process to identify sustainable, respectful, quality housing.  

鈥淲e are so excited and honored to be a part of this effort,鈥� said Jessica Dirks, program administrator. 鈥淚t speaks to the relationship we鈥檝e built here in the community, as well as with our county and our court customers, that they鈥檙e trusting us to help embark on this journey together as a community. We鈥檙e putting the individual鈥檚 needs first, working with them to identify their needs and wants, and providing individualized services to ensure people have the best chance possible to succeed. We are thrilled to be on the leading edge of this effort and proud to be able to help shape the development of future CARE Act programs.鈥�

As more communities in California develop CARE Act services, we anticipate changes and adjustments to the services as we learn more about what works best. Aligned with 罢别濒别肠补谤别鈥檚 values of Growth, Partnership, and Service, the programs actively participated in various community events throughout the year, including the 6th Annual Meet & Greet Job Fair sponsored by .

Wellness Center West, a mental health support program run by peers, offers activities, groups, and support, along with linkage to education, employment, and volunteering opportunities. 

During the job fair, Orange County AOT鈥檚 Peers, including Lori Fischer and Lei Portugal Calloway, along with other community partners such as REI Pacific Clinics, Peer Voices of Orange County, Orange County Health Care Agency, and the Department of Rehab, actively engaged with attendees. They provide job opportunity flyers, information, and giveaways to support individuals鈥� career endeavors.

The event features various activities aimed at promoting community engagement and empowerment. Attendees participated in bingo, enjoyed lunch, and even attended a fashion show titled 鈥淗ow to Dress for Success.鈥� Additionally, a raffle adds to the day鈥檚 excitement, allowing attendees to win prizes.

Valley Vista PSH is a new housing program in the heart of San Diego, CA.

Valley Vista PSH is open to individuals ages 18 and older who are experiencing homelessness or are at risk of homelessness.

Valley Vista PSH operates on the principle of providing comprehensive support services to our residents. As a resident of Valley Vista, you will have access to safe and comfortable living accommodations, on-site case management and support services, mental health resources and counseling, assistance with substance use treatment if needed, life skills training and educational opportunities, and community engagement activities and events.

Our program is specifically designed to support individuals with a history of mental illness or those who may be experiencing a mental health crisis. We believe in providing a welcoming and inclusive environment where all individuals can feel supported and empowered to work towards their goals.

When we think of recovery, we often think of it as a linear process. But anyone who has struggled with it knows it鈥檚 more like a series of peaks and valleys. A client at 罢别濒别肠补谤别鈥檚 facility has turned their recovery journey into a beautiful song that encapsulates their personal growth and the transformative power of hope.

The journey to recovery can be a challenging one. It鈥檚 a path filled with challenges, pain, and darkness. The client鈥檚 song tells a different story. It鈥檚 a story of their journey from darkness to light, filled with optimism for the future. The lyrics speak of their struggle but also their determination to overcome. 

The song鈥檚 lyrics, 鈥淚f I slip, that鈥檚 okay. I鈥檒l get back up and keep going,鈥� embody the spirit of hope and determination. Laurie Jones, the program鈥檚 director, admires the attitude displayed by the client. These words show that it鈥檚 okay to stumble and fall because what matters is getting back up and continuing the journey.

The client is a beacon of hope for their peers at Cordilleras Suites. Their journey and song serve as a reminder that things will get better and that it鈥檚 okay to have bad days. What鈥檚 important is to keep moving forward and striving for better days.
